Between the Lines · Language Intelligence · Berlin · Est. 2000
Specialist EN/DE translation for high-stakes documentation. Independent linguistic validation for AI-assisted workflows. One standard of judgment.
Some communications require human-only specialist handling. Others require independent review before AI-generated content goes public. BTL provides both, grounded in 25 years of practitioner judgment. Berlin, since 2000.
Service Model
Expert EN/DE translation for sensitive, complex and high-stakes written communication.
Independent linguistic validation, terminology governance and register review for AI-assisted language workflows.
Core Capabilities
Between the Lines is where every communication either succeeds or quietly fails. BTL was built to operate in that space: where register, implication, cultural weight and precision determine whether a message lands or dissolves.
Specialist EN/DE translation for technical documentation, product communication and high-stakes written materials where accuracy is not negotiable and register matters as much as meaning.
EN/DE SpecialistTerminology and clarity audits for existing translations and multilingual content. Identifying inconsistency, enforcing register and returning coherence to fragmented language assets.
Audit · ReviewHuman-supervised AI language support: prompt architecture, multilingual output evaluation, register governance for AI-generated content and language-aware system design. The intelligence layer that most studios lack.
Human-SupervisedPrecision English coaching for professionals operating in international environments: executive presence, written authority, presentation command and the register fluency that separates good English from credible English.
B2 → C1/C2Language clarity consulting for organizations producing complex written output: technical content, customer-facing documentation and multilingual communications that must work in more than one register simultaneously.
Clarity · StructureStructured programs for organizations with sustained multilingual communication needs: terminology databases, style guides, language training and AI-output review programs built for long-term quality.
Corporate · OngoingLanguage AI
AI systems can sound polished. They are not accurate by default. They produce text that looks correct at the surface and fails at the depth: wrong register, collapsed nuance, terminology that holds in isolation and breaks in context. That gap is precisely where BTL operates.
BTL works across both traditional and AI-assisted language environments. Where AI adds value, the studio applies controlled workflows for terminology checks, QA, validation and comparative review. The technology is selected deliberately. The judgment is always human.
AI is not the default answer. It is a controlled layer. What lives between the lines still requires accountable linguistic judgment.
Why the judgment cannot be automated.
Native English combined with German C2-level professional command. Not translation by approximation: language by ownership.
25 years of active translation practice across technical, commercial and specialist domains. No AI system replaces this pattern recognition.
AI output assessed against terminology, register, cultural register and communicative intent: not just surface accuracy.
No evangelism. No disruption rhetoric. Language AI as a precision tool, properly held.
Who We Serve
Businesses, agencies and institutions that cannot afford linguistic failure in their English–German communication: and who understand that quality is a decision, not a default.
German-speaking professionals who need English that commands rooms, closes deals and carries authority: taught by a native speaker who understands exactly where German-English interference costs you credibility.
Developers, content teams and organizations deploying AI in multilingual contexts who need a linguist's eye on the output: evaluating, correcting and designing language systems that actually hold up.
The Studio
BTL, Between the Lines, was established in Berlin in 2000 by Eric Leismer, a specialist translator with an MA in Translation (English–German) from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The studio's primary focus is EN/DE. Selected additional languages available upon request through trusted specialist partners.
The name is the thesis. Between the lines is where tone, intent and meaning are decided, cultural assumption operates and technically correct language can still fail commercially. The studio works in that space: across traditional human-led language work and controlled AI-assisted workflows, always with human-governed outcomes.
In an era when AI can produce polished-sounding text in seconds, the ability to judge whether that text actually works in register, terminology and cultural intent has become a scarce commercial skill. That judgment is built through practice, review and responsibility. It cannot be prompted into existence.

How We Engage
Every BTL engagement operates at one of three depths, depending on how much linguistic risk the work carries.
A defined piece of work with a clear deliverable: translation, review or linguistic audit of a specific document or content set. Fixed scope, clear outcome, delivered on time.
Common uses: one-off translation · QA review · terminology check
An ongoing language relationship with a defined scope: English coaching, AI output review, style-guide development or sustained multilingual communication support.
Common uses: coaching program · AI review layer · style guide
A standing engagement where BTL acts as the linguistic authority for an organization, governing register, terminology and communication quality across language-facing output over time.
Common uses: retainer · linguistic due diligence · register governance
Emerging Practice
"Every organization publishing AI-generated content across languages is carrying linguistic liability they have not yet measured."
Organizations deploying AI at scale in multilingual environments face a risk that legal, compliance and communications teams have not yet named properly. When AI-generated content fails in register, collapses in cultural context or drifts from established terminology: the damage is real: to brand authority, to contractual precision, to regulatory standing.
Linguistic Due Diligence is the structured review process that surfaces this risk before it becomes a problem. It applies the same principled scrutiny to language that financial due diligence applies to numbers: systematic, documented and defensible.
BTL is building this practice now, ahead of market demand. If your organization is publishing AI-assisted content in English and German, with selected additional languages coordinated through trusted specialist partners, but has not subjected it to independent linguistic review, the conversation starts here.

What it covers
Systematic review of AI-generated content for register consistency: formal/informal, technical/accessible, institutional/personal: across the full document set.
Verification that product, legal and domain-specific terminology is applied correctly and consistently. AI systems drift. This catches it.
Review of cross-language content for cultural assumptions, idiomatic failures and implication gaps that native AI output routinely introduces.
A structured findings document with risk classification, correction recommendations and a quality baseline for future content governance.
